Mariano was only 13 years old when his parents left him and his brother to immigrate to the US. One year later they decided to cross the border and reunite with their parents. Mariano struggled to learn English but was able to graduate high school with honors. Here’s Mariano’s journey back to the US.

Jorge Santana is a new transfer student at UNC-Chapel Hill this year from Puerto Rico. He was forced to move after Category four hurricane Maria struck the Island on September 20th of last year.
It was the first category four hurricane to impact Puerto Rico directly in eighty-five years.
Santana has been trying to adjust to this new environment but is grateful to have this opportunity at his dream school.
Today, people are still trying to recover, and some parts of the island are without electricity.
Santana says he hopes for the best as officials are still trying to figure out the death toll and Puerto Rico is struggling to recover.
